when children are quiet…

Monday, August 30th, 2010

… they’re usually up to no good. Like the time I was tap, tapping away working on the computer as they played cars in the living room. After a little while I couldn’t hear Chick Hicks banging into Lightning McQueen anymore or Layla’s squeaky Guido voice. So I peeked. And there I saw my once-black floor covered in snow. On careful inspection I realised it wasn’t in fact snow (cause that would be highly unlikely near the beach – even in winter), but paper. Teeny tiny little bits of torn-up paper from a nearby notepad. After a quick high-pitched “what on earth are you doing?”, Zak looked up at me and calmly informed me: “It’s ok mum, we’re just playing Paper Man.” Then proceeded to attempt to stick the paper all over himself. Paper Man is actually the man covered in paper in the HR Block tax ads confused about tax time. How can you get mad? So I let them limp around in the paper pile for a little while longer then we got recycling.

Then there was the time they’d snuck outside and bought in a bucket of dirt to play “diggers”. Or when Zak drew a kitten’s face on Layla with a permanent marker. Or when they got into the fruit bowl and ate everything in it. Or when they emptied the entire contents of the clean-washing basket onto the floor then topped it up with every item of clothing in Layla’s room “so it can reach all the way up to the ceiling.” Luckily I discovered this before they got into Zak’s clothes (this was this morning!).

But sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised. Like recently when I checked up on their “quiet time” in the afternoon to see this. They’d pulled their sleeping bags out of the linen cupboard, taken them out of their bags and laid them on the floor and climbed in because “we’re a bit sick and need to rest.”

PS: If you’re interested (hi Ange!), the kids sleeping bags are by Carstens. My mum bought them online from the States. I’m not sure where but here is an online store that ships internationally – you’ll have to contact them to see if they ship to your country and for rates. They’re really cute – the toys on the top are detachable and are stuck on with velcro and the pillows are a giant T-Rex and unicorn. They love them and there is a heap of other styles.

What do your kiddies do when your back is turned?

Steve and I met Bubble today and it was sooo cute. I know most ultrasound babies look the same – to everyone else. But to us, its another version of Zak and Layla who pretty much looked identical. And this one will fit right in – uncoorperative (not in the right position for the scan), active (literally using my uterus as a trampoline) and stubborn (refusing to budge from its slumber despite being poked and prodded).

But we did see a calming side: it was in the “rocking chair” position, so sitting upright – not hard to do in my uterus, which is tilted. So it’s sitting up with its legs crossed and arms up in a meditative pose. Our little yoga baby. I think I even saw a few “om” speech bubbles floating around in there too… I especially like this image of that position – because it’s front on it looks like a meditating alien. heheh

In the end, we finally got what we needed and were on our way. I did think, being our third time, we’d be quite nonchalant about the whole thing, but it was as exciting and miraculous and adorable as the first time. More so even as the equipment used was a lot more modern and clearer – we could see so much more than before. And it really performed for us, jumping up and down and waving its hand… it looked like an astronaut floating through space. Minus the spacesuit. Early days yes, but I’m thinking a boy. I just feel it will be. So going by my past two records, that will mean it will be a girl – I got it wrong both times! I guess we’ll find out for good sometime next year.

Somehow, it’s the weekend again. Enjoy yours – I know I will! Thanks for visiting as usual and I’ll see you next week

brag spot: shop 4 kids hearts me

shop4kids2

They must because I scored not one, not two, but three text appearances in the one issue. Proud. Well, technically they HAD to mention me in byline-form in the first mention because I wrote the article, but the other two were bonuses. I made Zakky and Layla show it off before Layla flipped through (and ruined) every page to point out every. single. baby.

A writer interviewed me for an article on mummy bloggers. I assumed I was one of many so was quite surprised to only see my name in the main article. And pleasantly surprised and grateful that Meg Mason managed to make me sound normal and not like the complete ditz I was on the phone.  I’m much better suited as the interviewer, not the interviewee (and if you ever heard me on the radio a few years back you’ll understand why this is so. I may have giggled the whole way through.)

And the third was an image of my kids creative corner to illustrate an article on storage and clutter. Zak and Layla were quite chuffed – and bemused – to see their space in the magazine. And promptly ran into the cabin to check it was still there, bless them.

But back to my article (it’s all about me, after all), it was a nice change to see the finished piece barely chopped and changed. It was also a pleasure to be able to give a little plug to some talented people I’ve met via my blog – Julie of Canberra’s Handmade Market and Shop Handmade and Viv of Ish & Chi. They fit in perfectly with the content and said all the right things – important stuff for us writers! I have a little tour of Julie’s Shop Handmade coming soon – I love the whole concept and am eagerly awaiting the book, which you can pre-order here. So, if you’re interested in all things handmade for kids – whether you like shopping for it or creating and selling yourself, check out the article. You’ll have to buy the issue for the whole article (it’s a 3-pager) but it’s SO WORTH IT. Not just for my article (!) but because it’s chockers with brilliant buys, lovely photoshoots and lots of nursery ideas. As it is every issue – now if they’d only bring it out more regularly…

5 bargain boredom busters + some waffle on online mags

BABIEKINS

There are some days when you wish you never had children. Horrid, but true. They’re usually the exact same day you have a thousand things to do and they’re not listening, are bored and not one of the 4126 things you’ve bought them in their lifetime is exciting, stimulating or remotely interesting enough to distract them for more than 2 seconds. Before you stick the “free to good home” signs on them and pop them on the kerbside (it’s sooo tempting at times) make a big hoo-ha about these activities – for some inexplicable reason, they work every single time for my two.

You can read what these five bargain boredom busters are over at Babiekins magazine which I wrote the article for. This kids-related mag has just been released this week and it’s a goodie, filled with all sorts of lovely images, hot buys, easy makes and cute fashion shoots, such as these, below.

I’m loving all these online magazines – it’s incredible what some can do with a little passion, determination and creativity. And what’s more, the talent involved! It takes an editor, deputy editor, stylists, writers, sub-editors, graphic artists, digital production specialists, production editors, editorial coordinators, advertising managers and sales staff, marketing managers, researchers, focus groups, publishers and more (printers, more scary production people etc) to put out a physical magazine. And these online mags are made with the smallest team multitasking to take care of all this between them – a lot of the time without publishing experience. Some of them are one-(wo)man bands. I bow to them all.

I do love that as a blogger I get to play all these things too. I’ve often thought about creating a one-off mag or small self-published book or something; just for fun. And just because I think it’d be so satisfying to get to create something physically beautiful from the images and words to the way it’s laid out. It’s certainly doable as many have proven – Fryd + Design is one that  comes to mind. All her own work.

I often wonder how long it’ll be before mag publishers cotton on to this multitasking and cut costs even more by hiring one multi-talented person instead of one trained-in-one-field. I know I used to pretend I was a graphic designer in my time as a subeditor and deputy ed – although not creatively, mind you. I’d just sneakily move the margins or increase the box to give myself more copy room. Got away with it a lot of the time, too! And I know at Real Living now the art director doubles as a photographer, the deputy editor styles, the sub-editors write and the digital production guru plays the dreaded production editor who harasses everyone to make deadline. Although this isn’t solely a cost-cutting exercise; these are creatives who have other talents and passions and are lucky enough to have a boss, Deb, who supports and encourages them.

I don’t think online mags will ever replace a real magazine, but I do think they could learn a thing or two about putting one together on a budget and with limited staff – the two biggest complaints in the publishing industry!!

Congrats to Priscilla and her little team on Babiekins. Thanks for letting me be a part of it! Want more online mags? Here is a quick list…

What do you think about the slew of digital mags hitting the web? Think they’ve lessened the need to pay at the newsagent? Or do you still prefer to physically flick through a paper version?

our growing family

familyl-r: Steve (who resembles Mr Garrison from South Park), Zak, Layla and me)

Notice something in the picture? Yes, there is a baby in my tummy. And there are carrots in the baby’s tummy, too, although at its current size and inability to consume and digest such a food, I think Zak used his artistic licence liberally here!

So for the third time in four years, I’m pregnant! And we’re all quite thrilled about it – we always wanted a biggish family so we’re on our way. We’re still in single-digit weeks but I’m not one to keep this kind of news a secret – heck I’ve managed to hold off telling you for a few weeks; that’s an achievement in itself! Aside from an incredibly large appetite, constant tiredness and a few queasy mornings, I’m all good – pregnancy-wise. I do, however, have a cold AGAIN and am pretty sure I’ve now been sicker this year more days than I’ve been well.

You know what this means, don’t you? I get to decorate another nursery! whoo hoo. I think they’re my favourite thing to do! And because we like to torture ourselves, we won’t be finding out the sex again until it’s born, so it’ll be gender neutral, though I’m thinking icy blues will feature either way… And, on that, I’m thinking it might be a boy this time. For now – I change my mind a fair bit! Let the guessing games begin! xx
