bedroom makeover: new black wall

blackwall3

I think it’d be safe to say I love my new black wall. I had a feeling I would – as soon as I started slapping on the black paint I could picture it finished with the side tables and new/old lamp. And this is exactly how I pictured it. I wish the rest of the room looked this clean and tidy, but it’s not even close. From the end of the bed there is this-sized-space-and-a-half, and it’s mostly piled with all the stuff I slid out of view for this picture hehe.

blackwall2I changed my mind about the chalkboard paint – they do have a water-based version but was out of stock so I went for Wattyl Low-Sheen in Colorbond Night Sky. Pretty much a perfect match to my beloved chalkboard. Two coats is all it took!

blackwall4My side: an old tree stump is my side table. Wondered what happened to my Tord Boontje garland light? Wonder no more – here it is! In case you’ve been living a world that doesn’t have design blogs or interiors magazine, let me tell you: hanging lightbulbs as bedside lamps with cord casually hanging from the wall or ceiling? Totally hot right now. Possibly and probably started by Sibella Court who has one in her bedroom. Of course mine is neither vintage or a cool designer find and is a total cheat: a handheld workman’s lamp from Bunnings of all places ($18!) with the garland wrapped around it. But I like it and that’s all that matters.

blackwall5Steve’s side: the newspaper pile again (Steve is a newspaper editor so we have quite the fire hazard collection of newspapers) with some fave books, an antler and fig candle.

Now I just need to get myself organised to finish the rest of the room… One day! More importantly, do we like?!

Two words for you – LOVE IT !

  2. I second that! It looks spectacular! The whole monotone and neutral feels of the space is perfect!!

  3. The Girl says:

Oh my goodness. I love it!

The boyfriend’s sister painted her wall black {the others white} though it is the wall opposite her bed and her bed is black with black sheets and leopard print and really makes the room look dark. But yours looks simply fantastic!

WE LOVE!!!!! Can you hear me screaming for my husband to come and have a look so I can convince him we really should paint the bedroom black!?!?!?!?!

  13. Bek says:

Yeah, I love it too! I am warming to this idea much quicker than my husband though..I don’t think I would get it passed him.

  14. Kylie says:

    Looks fantastic – great job!

  15. Clever girl!! LOVE IT! And don’t you have a black and white zebra rug somewhere too that would look perfect in the corner with a little rustic chair…..

  16. Melinda says:

Belinda, it looks gorgeous and I love the contrast of the silver Tord Boontje garland light.

I’m tossing up whether to do our full wall of wardrobe doors in black high-gloss polyurethane. I have picked a charcoal wool carpet so I am concerned about the combination being too dark. And it’s not something that can just be painted over if I change my mind. I think I’ll sit on it a while longer.

  17. That is super cool, I love it. Right two walls in shop are going black….

  18. julie says:

Me likey a lot! Well done, it looks fantastic Belinda. Adds so much depth to the room doesn’t it. And ties in so well with the ticking fabric and your Pony Rider cushion. Perfecto.

  19. Amanda says:

  28. Belinda says:

thank you all lovely people. i have to say it’s made a huge difference to this room. makes me want to get off my butt and finish the other side – except that i have so much to do so am trapped at my messy desk at the end of the bed…

mikaela, Alison and Viv, unfort there are no shadows on the wall. i’m not sure if it’s because it’s too close (it’s resting against the wall) or because the wall is black or because the TV was bouncing light from the other side of the room as well. I’ll try it again tonight and see if it makes a difference. It is cosy though regardless!

Jules – yours looks so great; LOVE the suzani! and my window is actually a stencil i painted on but i’m thinking of wiping it off and sticking on a decorative film instead because it’s still quite see-through. haven’t decided yet – I do love this pattern!

Jossie, if you do the lamp, I took the flippy part of the cage off that clips on the bottom. not sure why it was there anyway!
    xx

  29. The wall looks fab! LOVE IT!

  33. ali says:

Love this look! i want to recreate it NOW!

  34. Piper says:

WOW!! Ok, you’re making me want to do a black wall now – it looks so great in your bedroom!! I would be afraid it would feel to dark, but your room looks chic and light and airy. Love it

  35. HEART the black wall! Good job! we’re thinking of painting a black features wall too for our bedroom, but afraid that the room will look too gloomy and dark because we have a dark color timber flooring. perhaps with a bit white decor around the room, it’ll brighten things up. THANKS for a great inspirations!

  36. jenn says:

I LIKE!! I’m impressed with your bravery going so bold. Black is a great color… I’m itching to paint a bed black. Are you other walls white or grey? Thanks for the inspiration :)

  37. Belinda says:

nat – i had a really dark chocolate wall in our living room with black floors. i really loved it – especially how the white furniture popped against it, but in the end I painted over it as I had a lot of dark furniture in the space and it just felt a little dark. i think if you do one room with dark floors nad lots of light timber or white, it’d workd. but dark timber (like mine) could feel a little closed in and dark.

jenn – the rest of the walls are white: Dulux Whisper White. I think grey would make it a little gloomier. i like the high contrast of black and white! x

  38. Emma says:

    I love it- just gorgeous!

  39. raru says:

very very very pretty :) ))) love it.

  40. Looks wonderful. Great reading your post as well. your Photography is also good. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  41. indie.tea says:

Your room is so beautiful. I think the black walls are fantastically chic. (I personally want grey walls…your black ones are making me feel braver).

  42. Danielle says:

It looks amazing. As always :) we have a dark purple wall in our Brisbane house in our bedroom with white around it. It relays give the room that extra POP. I love how the window is framed right in the middle it’s a really nice focal point o rest your eyes on and I’m in lbe with your bedside table.

  43. Janette says:

I LOVE it! Looks amazing Belinda! and has made me feel that I will def do a dark grey wall in ur bedroom. The light looks fantastic too, I love that it’s an industrial type light with the garland over. Jxx

  44. Holly says:

Wow, I love it! It looks amazing.

  45. Kenziepoo says:

What a statement! I love black walls…Gorgeous! Great job Belinda!

  46. bizzy says:

love it! i think you should tackle the window wall next — that beautiful black wall/bed arrange is kicking the ass of those plain little drapes.

  47. LOVE. I’m all over black bedrooms these days…I just saw pictures of Jenna Lyons’ bedroom and am just obsessed with the dark walls and light bed linens look.

  48. Alice says:

Black isn’t a colour I’d usually say was a bedroom colour but yours looks great.

  49. Gorgeous!
Question–where did you get the striped fabric for the headboard? It’s beautiful too.

  50. Belinda says:

apples and onions – the striped fabric is just plain old black and white ticking fabric from a haberdashery store. should be easy enough to find wherever you are! x
