project tuesday: make your own desk

zdesk4

It appears I lied about posting last week’s discoveries yesterday – sorry – so will catch up Friday. Anyway… welcome to another project tuesday! This time, Zakky’s room. When planning his room I knew I wanted him to have a little desk space. He is constantly drawing, doing puzzles, learning to write, reading his books so I wanted him to have his own little spot to get creative. So once the wardrobe was in place, the space next to it was the perfect wall. I grabbed this little cube shelf from officeworks ($35), a piece of melamine cut to the right size (turned out a little too right so it is literally jammed in there) and some brackets and this is what I came up with!

And so his desk was born and he was very excited: “thanks for building my new desk mummy. It’s really really good” which made the whole $60 it cost all up to make so worth it. I left a gap at either end for his toybox seat and a basket of toys but also so the cubed shelf acts as a stabiliser. Then brackets connect the tabletop to the wall and just for extra support Steve popped a screw at the front into the wardrobe for it to lean on. There are a few gaps at the back thanks to the moulding but if you have a flat wall I can’t imagine there being one.

To dress it up a bit I strung up a ribbon and use silver clips for pics, his drawing and his thomas. And the shelf is big enough to fit all the important things: books, puzzles and basket of cars. The toybox is on wheels for easy moving in and out and there is enough room for both of them to sit and draw, which is very cute.

In case you’re wondering, the chalk drawing above is of a hippo. It’s standing on two legs cause “it’s singing the wimoway song” (there is a hippo that sings “the lion sleeps tonight” zak loves it and asked me to draw it. I can’t draw hippos to save my life – as proved when he told me my attempt at one looked like a seahorse – so I told him to show me a hippo. His is so much better!!

So here is the first peek of zakky’s new room. We’re still working on it but its getting there and I really love the turquoise with the white. Next up, a map of the world poster for the turquoise wall. Watch this space …

  1. I once saw a bathroom in a mag that had a map of the world decoupaged onto the ceiling, and the walls were painted turquoise. Sounds corny and kitsch but it looked amazing.

I am looking forward to see what you come up with !

That’s awesome – I really love it! The desk was really economical too.

I love the idea of having a huge world map. They look great and are educational too :o ) Perhaps if I had one my kids wouldn’t grow up not knowing the difference between the United States and Africa… like their mother…
